Looking Back on the Wascana Lake “Big Dig”

Posted on March 23, 2026

Yesterday, March 22 marked 22 years since completion of the excavation phase of the Wascana Lake Rehabilitation Project, widely known as the “Big Dig” in Regina, SK.

Clifton served as the lead firm, designing and managing the deepening and restructuring of Wascana Lake. Completed over 76 days, the project involved removing over 1 million cubic metres of material and working around the clock through a Saskatchewan winter to meet tight timelines.

Delivered in collaboration with the City of Regina, provincial and federal partners, and the Wascana Centre Authority, the project remains a notable example of large-scale urban earthworks carried out in a highly visible and sensitive environment.
