Cut-off Wall Design and Construction

Members of the Clifton team have been involved in the design and construction of some of the longest, deepest, and most complex cut-off walls in Western Canada. The designs start with a strong understanding of the hydrogeology and the geotechnical strength parameters. Clifton’s group of hydrogeology and geotechnical experts are recognized throughout Canada and are involved in all aspects of the design.

We offer complete design services, construction management, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control field services throughout the construction life cycle. Our team develops and implements detailed monitoring plans to support the cut-off wall through pre-construction, construction, and post-construction monitoring.

Economic Analysis

Clifton provides its clients with comprehensive economic analysis services, which include feasibility market analyses, detailed cash flow business cases, and broader provincial-scale impact assessments. Our in-house economic expertise allows us to evaluate direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts using input-output models to determine project value-added, income-generated revenue, or employment projections.

At Clifton, we also conduct studies that consider intangible socio-environmental implications, which are increasingly vital inputs to Environmental Assessments and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) metrics.

Our team understands the critical intersection of engineering and financial work, and can collaborate with the owner’s team and partnering financial consultants. This collaboration is a significant value-added service for sensitive or complex projects.

Geohazards

Our team assesses and monitors geohazards and designs and constructs mitigation measures. We maintain frequent communication with our clients and are available around the clock. In case of an emergency, we are equipped to quickly prepare and mobilize. Solutions are tailored to the specific geotechnical conditions of each site. We have extensive knowledge and experience in dealing with the unique geotechnical challenges of building and maintaining infrastructure in Western Canada.

Geophysical Investigations

Clifton offers non-invasive and non-destructive geophysical surveys that can model soil profiles, locate buried objects, map groundwater, delineate environmental contamination, and measure physical and engineering soil properties.

Survey methods include acoustic methods such as Seismic Refraction, Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and Refraction Microtremor (ReMi). We also use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Electromagnetic (EM) surveys.

These geophysical methods can enhance or replace drilling services and help with data acquisition in challenging terrains.

Instrumentation

At Clifton, we stay up-to-date on the latest instrumentation technologies. We have the expertise and equipment to integrate an optimal set of sensors and applications to obtain precise data. We then interpret this data to improve designs, ensure the anticipated performance of structures, monitor and manage risks, and document compliance with applicable regulations.

We have wide-ranging experience with various data collection systems, including manual data collection, data loggers, automatic data acquisition, and remote database management systems. Our advanced data collection systems enable us to collect and access data from remote sites quickly and accurately.

Major Irrigation Projects

Clifton provides engineering solutions to address water-related challenges, specifically in developing groundwater and surface water supplies for irrigation operations in Alberta and Saskatchewan for a wide variety of private and public clients. Locating and managing irrigation water supplies requires expertise from multiple practice groups. Customized cross-disciplinary teams are formed to select the correct irrigation conveyance, storage, and distribution system layouts. These layouts optimize proximity to the water source and the most suitable irrigation lands, balancing capital and operational expenditures with community benefits.

Mining and Tailings Management

We help our clients manage risk and costs through our practical and responsible approach to natural resources.

We serve clients across Canada and internationally in various sectors, such as potash, uranium, precious metals, diamonds, industrial minerals, oil and gas, and coal. Our advisory and engineering services cover the entire life cycle of a mine, from feasibility studies to site characterization and permitting, to design and construction, monitoring and assessment, to decommissioning and reclamation.

Our team has decades of experience on both sides of the industry’s regulatory apparatus, and we leverage this knowledge to provide informed and effective support to our clients and the communities in which they operate through meaningful engagement.

Numerical Modelling

Clifton has been a pioneer in the development and effective utilization of numerical analysis software. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Clifton beta-tested the first versions of PCSLOPE, PCSEEP, and transport models. These software tools were developed by former Clifton employees at the University of Saskatchewan on mainframes using punch cards for data input. This software would later become among the most well-known numerical modelling tools in geotechnical engineering.

Today, software tools such as GeoStudio, RocScience, Plaxis LE (formerly SoilVision), Plaxis, and various flavours of MODFLOW are routinely used on many projects. Clifton continues to lead, with a new focus on developing an OpenGround Cloud database of Clifton’s extensive collection of geotechnical information in Saskatchewan. With access to a large historic database and ever-improving 3D data analysis tools (Leapfrog), Clifton can rapidly provide high-quality assessments with a reproducible workflow to meet the ever-tightening project schedules.

Railway Engineering

For more than 35 years, Clifton has been offering engineering services to the railway industry in Canada and the western United States. Our services include geotechnical assessments, remedial designs, planning, siding and yard design, crossing safety assessments, construction supervision, track inspections, ballast testing and ballast quarry development. We are a member of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association. We prioritize safely maintaining track speed while reducing the number of slow orders to return the track to maximum timetable speeds. Our team of geotechnical and construction experts offers a range of rail services, including route location, intermodal facility design, grade crossing design and landslide investigations.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Clifton uses Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to provide high-resolution geo-referenced orthomosaic base maps for site investigations. These maps help produce figures that depict site boundaries, sample locations, boreholes, and monitoring wells. Additionally, UAVs are used to help assess the success of long-term remediation projects through high-quality vegetation imagery. Clifton operates a fleet of quadcopter platforms for various imaging and lidar needs. Our UAV operators comply with Transport Canada regulations, have undergone training, and hold Industry Canada Radiotelephone – Aeronautical (ROC-A) operator certificates. They also participate in ongoing in-house UAV operations training provided by Clifton.
